Hetmyer stars as Guyana brush aside St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

Guyana Amazon Warriors joined Trinbago Knight Riders as the early pacesetters of CPL 2019, picking up their second win to start the season with an almost clinical dismantling of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at the Providence Stadium. A disciplined bowling effort headed by Shadab Khan's 2 for 20 kept the Patriots down to 153, a total that was overhauled with ease courtesy an unbeaten 70 from Shimron Hetmyer.

Guyana didn't make the most disciplined of starts after electing to bowl with Keemo Paul adjudged to have overstepped despite bowling Kjorn Ottley. But the Patriots handed the luck right back with Ottley getting run-out soon after. This was also a period in the early game that saw Guyana switch to spin from both ends as Chris Green and Shadab kept a tight lid on the scoring. Devon Thomas held one end together with a steady half-century but it required an injection of momentum from Fabian Allen, who scored 33 off 19 to take the score to 153.

Guyana didn't muck around in the chase as Brandon King and Chandrapaul Hemraj added 63 for the first wicket inside seven overs. Hemraj was the aggressor, his 39 off 24 allowing the follow-up batsman to play their way in to the chase. Not that Guyana needed any other batsmen as Shimron Hetmyer grabbed the chase by the collar and polished it off with eight wickets and seven balls to spare with a 47-ball 70 that included seven fours and three sixes, the last of which brought the winning runs.

Brief scores: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 153/8 in 20 overs (Devon Thomas 62, Fabian Allen 33; Shadab Khan 2-20, Ben Laughlin 2-43) lost to Guyana Amazon Warriors 159/2 in 18.5 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 70*, Chandrapaul Hemraj 39; Sheldon Cottrell 1-35) by eight wickets.
